Roll mills for cross-wedge rolling of piece billets and rods 

Scheme of rolling

A scope of high-productive roll mills for cross-wedge rolling has been developed at VNIIMETMASH and successfully worked at some works.


The mills are intended for hot rolling of multidiameter shafts with sharp transition from one diameter to another, of round section with diameter 10 … 130 mm and length up to 700 mm.


In rolling process the treatment takes place with the concentrated pressing at the small part of rolled product. Due to that fact the favorable condition are created for the metal displacement in the direction of part axis and the ability for the cavity or other defects forming is eliminated.


The billet heated to 1100…1150°C is placed between two rolls with wedge gauges. Peaks of wedge gauges capture a billet and when going deeper simultaneously displace a metal in direction of billet axis. Rolling of one piece occurs per one revolution.


Rolling process at these mills has been fully automatized and mechanized. Hot rolled rods are used as an initial material.

Mills replace lather automatic machine and forging equipment due to:

  • high coefficient of metal use up to 0,95;

  • high productivity from 240 to 2400 pieces per hour;

  • accuracy of rolled pieces, that demands the finishing treatment only.

Mills can be used at stamping lines, securing the production of billets with higher complexity for the following stamping without burrs.



Mills for rolling of piece billets


Guarantee the high coefficient of metal use comparing to traditional technologies due to metal elongation in the direction of part axis. Metal is deformed in the radial direction simultaneously with axial extension by special wedge gauges, fulfilled at rolls.


Coefficient of metal use is 0,85 … 0,90.

Guarantee additional saving of metal even comparing to rolling of piece billets due to decreasing of end wastes.

During 1970…1997 VNIIMETMASH had elaborated, made and supplied to different works of Russia, CIS, USA 26 mills for cross-wedge rolling, including:


  • 4 mills 40 x 150 for works of Russia and Ukraine;

  • 13 mills 50 x 520 for works of Russia , Ukraine, Belorussia, Azerbaijan;

  • mill 130 x 500, mill 130 x 600, mill 80 x 500, 3 mills 100 x 300 for works of Russia;

  • mills 100 x 700 and 50 x 520 for USA.

Billets of parts, made at mills of cross-wedge rolling are used at the production of automobiles, tractors, electrotechnical machines, hydraulic apparatus and in many other branches of industry.


Our products always are cheaper, than ones produced by other methods of treatment.


VNIIMETMASH carries out:

  • complete delivery, mastering and starting;

  • elaboration of new technologies for part rolling and rolling instrument;

  • production and delivery of products, made at cross-wedge rolling mill;

  • production and delivery of rolls;
