Rotor-type hot saws R3

In VNIIMETMASH high-capacity circular hot saws with higher rates of cutting tool feed to rolled stock to be cut, based on using rotation of a rotor, have been designed, brought to a commercial level and widely used in industry. These saws are successfully used for cutting hot metal: bar, structural shapes, pipes, beams and billets in rolling-mill, forge and blanking shops, continuous steel casting plants, etc.


The most efficient application field for high-capacity rotor-type saws is the cutting of large-section round bars (up to 500 mm in diameter).


The design of rotor-type saws is based on the principle of circular traverse of the saw blade centre. Such a kinematic diagram makes it possible to avoid considerable dynamic loads due to a relatively larger length of acceleration and braking of the cutting tool and absence of reverse movement mechanism carrying the saw blade. Rotation of the saw blade and carrier is effected by two independent electric motors. The saw is provided with saw blade water cooling and centralized greasing.


With rotor-type hot saws, increased cutting speeds and feeds enable the depth of cut to be increased to 0.5 ... 1.0 mm, that considerably exceeds analogous characteristics of other saw types. At the same peripheral velocity the cutting efficiency increases by several scores of times.


The application of new speeds and feeds in combination with an originally designed cutting blade feed mechanism gives the following advantages:

  • Shorter cutting time (for example, a solid billet having a cross-section of 340 mm square can be cut in 0.8 s).

  • Wide range of sections to be cut.

  • High durability of cutting tool (saw blade).

  • Better working conditions (the effect of sound emitted from rotor-type saws doesn't exeed some tenth fractions of a second, saw blade and rotor are maximally enclosed so that scattering of chips is prevented during cutting and safe saw operation is ensured).

  • Reduction of specific electric power consumption (on rotor-type saws the electric power consumption is about 2...3 times lower than on traditional design saws).
